Prompt:
"Simply put, a digital footprint is the record or trail left by the things you do online. Your social media activity, the info on your personal website, your browsing history, your online subscriptions, any photo galleries and videos you’ve uploaded — essentially, anything on the Internet with your name on it.
Watch these videos below.
1. What are your thoughts on these videos? Have you ever been surprised by someone that you thought you respected and they had a completely different persona in social media? Have you ever known someone that has been negatively impacted by social media?
2. Reflect on your own social media...google yourself. Take a look at your digital footprint through https://pipl.com/. Future employers WILL look at your digital footprint - it is critical that you establish a professional online presence and clear out anything that is not how you would like to represent yourself.
Using the gmail/google account you have created for this course, create a professional social media presence - a new facebook for professional purposes, twitter, etc. Start by connecting with classmates in this course and post educational items of interest to these sites. Add these to your PLN! Your PLN is a collection for this course, but can be used far beyond. Make this project count for your future!
Create a Linkedin account. Having no social presence is not a good thing in the eyes of future employers. Create your professional image. Add your linkedin account to this discussion board, add classmates to your network, and be sure to add to your PLN.
Professional photo: Be sure you use the same professional photo for all of your sites - this adds a "branding" so to speak for your name.
Join/add social networks to your PLN. Look on page 211 of our text to get some ideas of where to start - join and add other sites that may be relevant to your discipline."
Here's my response to the prompt:
Since I am a student-athlete I was taught from the first time I had social media to make sure I think before I post. Some of the things in these videos surprised me. Like how could some of those people put those partying pictures on their social media. I feel as if it is common sense to post material that is professional and less personal. Or make your account available to certain people. I have been surprised by someone that I respected who posts awful/annoying things on Facebook. It makes me rethink my original opinion of them. I don’t know anyone personally that has been affected by social media. When I googled myself, it was mostly articles for sports and from school. I think that my digital footprint is clean. I didn’t have a big social media presence though. I added all my accounts and still have a hard time finding myself on the website we were supposed to look ourselves up on.
